How to add a discount and welcome popup on Shopify

It's one of the oldest tricks in e-commerce. Here's how to set one up on Shopify.

How discount & welcome popups grow your Shopify sales

Besides that first sale, a well-timed pop-up does a few more things for your store:

  • Increases first-order conversion by giving new visitors a reason to buy now instead of leaving.
  • Collects emails in exchange for the discount, so you can market to visitors who don't eventually convert on their first visit.
  • Works well on cold traffic from ads and socials, where visitors don't have any history with your brand.
  • Delivers the discount code automatically, so you don't have to manually send a follow-up.

Next, I'll reveal how to add a discount pop-up using a Shopify pop-up app.

How to add a discount popup on Shopify

Setting a pop-up takes a few minutes. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Install the Kaching Upsell & Email Popup app on Shopify

The easiest way is to install a popup app like Kaching Upsell & Email Popup. This app handles popup creation and design through a no-code, section-by-section editor.

Search for the app on the Shopify App Store and click Install.

Step 2: Choose a discount or welcome template

Create a new popup and pick a template that fits your offer. Don't overthink the design at this point. Just make sure whichever template you choose has a headline, room for the discount code, and a field to collect an email or phone number. Most templates cover that already.

Step 3: Customize the popup and set the discount code

With your template selected, adjust the popup to match your store. Change the colors, fonts, images, headline, button, and other elements so it doesn't look out of place on your website.

Also, remember to keep the copy short. One headline, one line explaining the offer, and one field for the email address are usually enough. I'd skip anything more than that.

For a first-order discount, something like this is enough:

Get 10% off your first order

Enter your email to get your discount code.

[Get My Discount]

Then add or generate the discount code. You can use a shared code like "WELCOME10" for every new subscriber or generate a unique code for each customer.

Step 4: Set display rules

Now set up how the pop-up shows up, when, and where:

  • Limit it to new visitors: A welcome discount may not be the best offer for someone who's already bought from you.
  • Give it a delay: 5 to 10 seconds is usually enough. Otherwise, show it when the visitor tries to leave your website.
  • Choose where it appears: Show the pop-up on just a few pages, like the homepage and collection pages. There's no reason to interrupt someone at checkout with a welcome offer.
  • Control how often it shows: Nobody wants the same offer popping up on every page they click to. Set the pop-up to appear once per session.
  • Check it on mobile: Make sure the pop-up doesn't cover the product, push the close button out of reach, or take up the entire screen.

Step 5: Test and go live

Sign up through your own popup the way a customer would. I recommend that you use a test email and check the following:

  1. Popup shows when it should
  2. Email form works
  3. Discount appears after signup
  4. Code works at checkout for the right amount
  5. Discount applies to the products you intended
  6. Popup doesn't keep appearing after it has been dismissed

Once that checks out, go ahead and publish it.

Welcome popup vs discount popup: which one do you need?

A welcome popup is useful for introducing your store or collecting emails from new visitors. However, it doesn't have to include a discount.

A discount popup focuses on the offer itself and doesn't need to ask for an email. The entire idea of the discount is to basically encourage a purchase.

Welcome popup Discount popup
Main goal Grow your email list Push a specific offer or sale
Typical trigger First-time visitor, delayed or exit intent Any visitor, often sitewide
Email required Usually yes Sometimes
Best for Cold traffic, long-term list building Time-limited promotions

You can actually put them together as one popup. For example:

Welcome! Get 10% off your first order.

This gives you an opportunity to get the email address while giving the visitor a reason to buy.

You can also turn the offer into a spin-the-wheel or a gamified popup. Instead of just showing the discount, the popup becomes a small game where the visitor "wins" a discount. This tends to boost signup rates.

How to add a discount popup using the native Shopify app

If you'd rather start with what's already free in your Shopify admin, Shopify Forms is the native form and popup builder.

1. Install Shopify Forms

Install Shopify Forms from the Shopify App Store

2. Enable the Forms app embed

After installing the app:

  • Go to Online Store in Shopify admin.
  • Open your current theme.
  • Click Edit theme.
  • Open App embeds.
  • Turn on Forms.
  • Click Save.

3. Create the popup

Go to Apps > Forms and select Create form.

Choose Popup form.

Select the type of popup and then customize.

4. Add the discount

Set the discount you want customers to receive after submitting the form.

5. Preview and activate the popup

Preview the form, then publish.

Using Shopify Forms is fine for basic welcome popups. It's also free, but very limited, especially compared to a dedicated popup app.

  • There's no exit-intent trigger
  • The design options are limited to just a few layouts
  • There aren't any gamified formats

For a first popup or a low-traffic store, it does the job. If popups are the main part of your conversion strategy, a Shopify popup app gives you a lot more control over timing, targeting, and design.

Discount popup best practices

A discount popup can work well, but the offer needs to be relevant and easy to use. These are my top recommendations for success.

Time the popup right

Showing a popup the instant someone lands on your homepage almost guarantees they'll close it without reading it. A short delay or an exit-intent trigger gives them time to see your store first. In my experience, exit-intent popups tend to convert a bit better on desktop. Either way, stick to one popup per session, so returning visitors aren't seeing the same offer on every page they open.

Pick a discount that converts without killing margin

10% off is the usual starting point for a first-order discount, and it's usually enough to make a visitor buy a product without cutting too deep into your margin. A fixed dollar amount can work better on lower-priced products.

Offering free shipping works too, especially if delivery cost is the main reason people abandon their cart. Try each option and compare them before settling on one.

Target the right visitors

For first-order or welcome discounts, target new visitors and exclude existing customers. There's no point offering a first-order discount to someone who's already a customer. Make sure not to include your checkout and post-purchase pages so the popup doesn't interrupt someone who's already buying.

Make the code effortless to redeem

Set the code to auto-apply at checkout when possible, so the visitor doesn't have to copy and paste it or, at minimum, make it a one-click copy. Clearly state when it expires, and repeat the code in the confirmation or welcome email so they don't lose it the moment the popup closes.
